The FDA (U.S. Food and Drug Administration) issued a warning to consumers about the risk of permanent eye injury, and even blindness, associated with decorative contact lenses distributed without a prescription and without proper fitting by an eye-care professional. The FDA has received reports of eye problems, such as damage to the cornea and eye infections, associated with decorative contact lenses. The majority of reports involve teenagers due to the popularity of changing eye color and keeping up with the latest trends.

Woman tears out own cornea while removing contact lens
A woman pulled out her cornea while removing a special type of contact lens that make the wearer's irises appear larger.
The woman, surnamed Wu, suffered permanent vision damage when she took the contacts out after wearing them for more than 10 hours.
Wu's vision dropped from 1.5 to 0.65 in one eye. She said angrily, "The doctor told me that my cornea came out with the contact lens." The damage to Wu's eye was done to the parenchymal layer, which is the third layer in the cornea, and would be permanent, the doctor said. Wu was told not to rub her eyes because it may make cause her cornea to rupture again.
Wu said she brought a pair of Innova contact lenses that make the irises appear larger, but after wearing them for more than 10 hours, she felt her eyes were dry and then proceeded to remove the lenses at home. Immediately after she removed the lenses, she felt a sharp pain in her eyes that made her unable to open them, she said. After she struggled to open her eyes, the tears kept coming out of her eyes and her vision became blurred, she said, adding, "It was so painful that I wanted to kill myself."
The special contact lenses that can make the wearer's eyes look bigger and shinier have attracted a lot of attention from consumers because many entertainers also wear them. It is said that the famous Japanese pop music singer Ayumi Hamasaki, also wear the special lenses to make her eyes look bigger.
