The Spanish tenor, Placido Domingo, held a concert in Tokyo as scheduled on Sunday.
Domingo, known as one of the world's Three Tenors, has visited Japan more than 20 times to perform in concerts and operas.
He was raised in Mexico and experienced the earthquake that hit the country in 1985.
Domingo was in Washington when he heard about the massive earthquake and tsunami in eastern Japan, and was saddened by the news.
He chose the Japanese song "Furusato" or "Hometown" for an encore, and sang in a soft but strong voice with the audience of about 3,600 people.
A number of foreign musicians have canceled concerts in Japan due to the earthquake and the accidents at a nuclear power plant.
Domingo said he came to Japan, thinking that this would be an especially meaningful concert. He said he had lost relatives in the Mexican quake, and can sympathize with the Japanese survivors. Domingo said he wants everyone to believe that he or she can regain his or her strong will some day.
Domingo will hold another concert in Tokyo on Wednesday, and a portion of the ticket sales will be used to help the affected areas. Donations will also be collected at the venue.
